We’ve been working with Bristol City Council to ensure community voice and influence in the regeneration of Filwood Broadway. The regeneration project at Filwood Broadway is the latest milestone in a decades-long history of community activism, with many organisations forming to respond to urgent local needs.

Filwood Broadway High Street Improvements
The plans to transform Filwood Broadway include refurbishment of Filwood Community Centre, new council homes on the old cinema site and improvements to the public space. Alongside this, there are on-going high street improvements, initially led by locally based team led by Architecture 00, alongside architect George Lovesmith.
Architect 00 and George worked with local businesses and stakeholders, outcomes have included new signage and improvements to shop fronts for existing businesses. The offer of business start-up support, events and pilot projects and the setting up of Filwood Broadway Action team (FBAT) made up of local residents, representatives from community organisations, businesses and council officers.
Filwood Broadway Action Plan
The Filwood Broadway Action plan has been developed by Bristol City Council, Architecture 00, George Lovesmith and Studio Mothership alongside the Filwood Broadway Action Team (FBAT). It is a long-term community led High Street Strategy and action plan – outlining a vision for a thriving community-led high street at Filwood Broadway. The plan sets out the short, medium, and long-term goals for the high street and the actions needed to achieve them. Read the plan.
Shared goals for the high street include: making Filwood Broadway a destination that serves local needs, supporting the local economy and creating places for young people.
Further developments will include launching a Community Chest Fund, giving local people the opportunity turn great ideas into action.
FBAT members decided that funding should be allocated for a dedicated Community Connector role to strengthen community networks and support the FBAT in delivering these strategic objectives. To support this, Knowle West Alliance has employed a part-time Community Connector.
Her name is Alex Dibble and she started in her role in mid June 2026. Alex had previously volunteered as a resident on FBAT. We received many applications, at interview Alex was the outstanding candidate, and we are happy she accepted the position.
“I am a local resident in Knowle and have lived here for 15 years, I was inspired by the change I saw happening in Filwood Broadway and that led me to joining the FBAT. It has been great to see and hear all the hard work that has already gone into creating the Filwood Broadway Action plan. Now I have been appointed as Highstreet Community Connector, I am looking forward to proactively working with you all and delivering on those actions outlined.
I started on the 15th June (two days a week). I have been warmly welcomed by Ruth and Gemma into the KWA team and all at the KWMC. I have had some great introductory meetings so far with Bristol City Council Community Development, Local residents with experience of the KW Regeneration framework, BCC Recreate Filwood Broadway team, George Lovesmith and Architect 00. I have also met with the BCC Economic Development team and the Filwood Broadway Community Centre team. So, lots of connections already! I attended a Community Asset training day and have already had some safeguarding training.
My main focus over the coming weeks will be around building more connections and gaining a wider knowledge on key areas. Please do get in touch if you would like to meet or have any suggestions of key contacts I should reach out to.”
