Springfield Community Allotment

In 2022, Knowle West Alliance was successful in its bid to Bristol City Council for the community allotment site at Springfield, led by re:Work. Our aim was to retain this beautiful space for community use.

At the end of 2024 re:Work ceased trading. The lease was transferred from re:Work to We Are More a local redsident led organisation, who have been meeting and growing at Springfield regularly.

The Springfield Community Allotment steering group issued the following statement in November 2024:

“Springfield Community Allotment is a partnership project which is led by local community group We Are More alongside Knowle West Alliance, Knowle West Media Centre and Square Food Foundation with support from BCC Community Development. After the sad news about the closure of our partner organisation re:Work we are still committed to it being held and managed as a community resource. Our intention for the transfer of lease to WAM ‘we are more’ Afterschool club acts as a powerful demonstrator of increased community-led action which is in line with the Knowle West Alliance approach to building community power from the grassroots up.”

Jasmine Tippett local resident and chair of We Are More said:
“We are More are delighted that we will continue our work growing and cooking fresh produce at Springfield Community Allotment and opening our doors widely for our community to provide a resource that many can enjoy”

Springfield’s mission remains the same, a group of residents, groups and organisations working together to:

1. Grow Food for Local People:

We prioritise volunteers and user groups being able to eat, share and buy food we grow

2. Learn together:

How to grow food, how to collaborate, how to organise and connect

3. Share responsibilities and actions:

Residents, groups and organisations are equal partners, sharing and caring for this space together

4. Access:

We want residents to have opportunities to grow food, learn skills and be in nature.

We believe that that this site, along with other community green spaces, is key to supporting health and wellbeing in Knowle and Filwood. Springfield Community Allotment is focused on growing food, health, wellbeing, skills development and community connections.  We are working towards many people connecting here, through volunteering, activities and events.

Good food for all is not a radical concept.
