What is the local plan?
The Government requires every local planning authority to create a Local Plan.
What Bristol City Council (BCC) say about their plan: “The new Local plan will set out how Bristol will develop over the next 20 years. It will help deliver the new homes and jobs we need and safeguard the environment we value.”
The Local Plan is the core document under which pieces of land or areas will be considered for development in the future.
Local Plans outline priorities for the city: housing need and house building, economic development; setting aside areas that might be used for businesses to create jobs, protecting green spaces and creating more sustainable communities.
Why does it matter to me?
The Local Plan is the frame that will inform the future of the city. All decisions on future developments will be considered through that frame.
This means what goes into the Local Plan now determines the future of your area.
A Local Plan is created by every local planning authority in consultation with the community.
The council must ask for and consider feedback from the community. These are called representations.
This an opportunity to have your say now and influence the future your area.
You can support or object. Have your voice heard to get the best for Knowle West.
Which bits matter to Knowle West?
The Local Plan will set out future developments for Knowle West and for the rest of Bristol.
Once a site is approved for development as part of the Local Plan, it is very difficult to change that decision.
The details about the Local Plan and supporting documents are available from Bristol City Council here
The list of site allocations for development for Filwood Ward can be found in the Bristol Local Plan Annex Development Allocations. There are 10 areas in Filwood Ward.

How can I get involved?
Details of the Local Plan and accompanying documents can be found on Bristol City Council website here.
Bristol City Council accepts representations via on-line portal, email or post – full details here.
The deadline for representations is Friday 26 January 2024
“Representations on the publication version should relate to the tests of soundness for local plans, i.e. whether the local plan is positively prepared, justified, effective and consistent with national policy.”
Local Residents Planning Groups will be organising meetings and opportunities to give feedback and influence the local plan. KWA will share links to events via social media.
